Successful 33rd AEFCA Symposium thanks to dedicated hosts

25 March 2013 - The first AEFCA Symposium to be held in a Balkan state took place from 18 to 22 November 2012 in Split, Croatia, following the initiative of AEFCA Vice-President Fredi Fiorentini, and with the committed support of the Croation FA (HNS) leadership.

Just short of 240 coaches from 60 different countries – including some 50 domestic participants coaching teams in the country's higher leagues – attended the event that featured highly interesting indoor as well as outdoor presentations under the motto of "Modern aspects of football coaching".

Analysing EURO 2012 and the 2012 Olympic Games Football Tournament

Following up on the official welcome by HNS President Davor Šuker, AEFCA General Secretary Karlheinz Raviol introduced the comprehensive range of topics that had been selected for the event, including the reports issued by the Technical Study Groups seconded to two international tournaments:

On behalf of UEFA, Dušan Fitzel, Technical Director of the Czech FA (CMFS) , analysed the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, while Dany Ryser, head of the Swiss FA's (SFV) youth national teams, came back from his FIFA mission to deal with the Men's and Women's Olympic Games Football Tournaments that took place in and around London last summer. Both provided an instructive overview of these major football events and concluded their presentations by highlighting the general trends modern coaches should be aware of.

In Abdel Moneim Moustafa Hussein (or simply "Shatta" as his numerous friends call him), the list of presenters included the first-ever African colleague to speak about the African game. In his capacity of CAF Technical Director, he drew an impressive picture of the development of football in Africa, focussing on the none-too-easy challenge of talent promotion and coach education. He and his two European colleagues then formed the on-stage panel that debated the "Future of Football".

Day two - main focus on "The Croatian Way "

In celebration of the HNS's Centenery, 20 November had been declared "Croatia Day", during which participants were treated to a wide-ranging presentation of the national association's manifold developments and activities past and present. Heading the national teams' department, Zorislav Srebrić, took his audience on a trip down memory lane pointing out the past 100 years' highlights, while current national team head coach Igor Štimac looked ahead to what's in store for him and his players, in particular with regard to the remaining qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The latter topic was also at the centre of a panel discussion which saw Igor Štimac joined by his counterparts from Slovenia and Montenegro, as well as coaching legend Ivan Ozim (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Two practical demonstrations, held in Hajduk Split's time-honoured Poljud stadium, rounded off that special day, with HNK Hajduk coach Mišo Krstičević and Croatia U19 national team coach Dinko Jeličić expertly putting players through their paces.

Day three – high quality maintained

The high point of day three was no doubt Bob Browaeys's much-applauded presentation on "The Belgium vision on youth development", which impressively explained why and how this (comparatively small) European country has managed to produce so many outstandingly talented and successful players.

Likewise, IT specialist Robin Russel, who has a proven track record of supporting UEFA and The FA, showed he knows how to connect with audiences by presenting "The coaches' guide to the web". Somewhat provocatively asking his listeners whether they'd rather be "Victim" or "Champion", he left them in no doubt that only the latter can be the right answer.

Later on, a working meeting scheduled exclusively for AEFCA member associations focussed on questions concerning the Alliance's future activities. An attractive programme of light entertainment brought the event to an enjoyable close.
