Sporting success for AEFCA Vice-Presidents
1 June 2010 – To anyone who has ever doubted that prominent Alliance members can also be successful on the sidelines of a football pitch, think again – AEFCA Vice-Presidents Craig Brown and Andreas T. Michaelides, as well as co-opted Executive Committee member Jacques Muller have taken their respective teams to unsuspected heights.
Last week, Jacques Muller’s Jeunesse Esch completed the 2009/10 BGL Ligue season as Luxembourg champions. His first major test at European level will come in the shape of the UEFA Champions League qualifying matches scheduled to take place on 14 and 21 July 2010. Just which team he’ll be up against will only be revealed at the draw on 21 June 2010.
When former Scotland manager Craig Brown took the reigns at Motherwell FC in late December 2009, they were languishing at the bottom of the Scottish Premier League (see also NEWS of 29 January 2010). The club ended the season in fifth position, which has earned it a place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League (opponent for match dates 15 and 22 July 2010 to be drawn on 21 June 2010). In January this year, Brown deservedly won the “Scottish Manager of the Month” award.
Last but definitely not least, Andreas T. Michaelides assumed responsibility as head coach of AEK Larnaca FC in early December 2009. Following relegation to the Cypriot Second Division after the 2008/09 season, Michaelides revived the club’s fortunes and took it back into the island’s top flight, the Cypriot First Division.
Let us jointly wish the three of them the best of luck and success in the coming season, at both national and international level.
