From 4-7 December 2010, the Polish capital Warsaw was the scenic backdrop for the XXXI AEFCA Symposium. Under the motto of “What can we learn from the 2010 FIFA World Cup?”, the convention focussed on last year’s showpiece event.

Speaking on behalf of the world football governing body FIFA, french World (1998) and European (2000) Champion Christian Karambeu presented the official findings compiled by the FIFA Technical Study Group, while UEFA Director Andy Roxburgh analyzed the tournament from a European perspective. Throwing the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League season in the mix, he highlighted the latest trends likely to influence further developments in the game. Vladimir Weiss, who took the Slovak national team to South Africa, provided attendees with an authentic account of his tournament preparations, as well as of his work before and after matches.

In a much-applauded presentation, German FA coach Jörg Daniel looked at his association’s youth and talent promotion policy which, following a thorough re-design some 10 years ago, has borne visible fruit as demonstrated by World Cup results. In his capacity of Technical Director of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Jeff Tipping reported on the great strides made by football (or soccer, rather) in the USA, despite fierce competition by American Football, Baseball and Basketball.

Co-hosting the Symposium, representatives from the Polish FA and coaches’ association covered a broad range of issues ranging from the current state of football in Poland to the country’s preparations for EURO 2012. Roughly 150 licensed Polish coaches, including current national head coach Franciszek Smuda, also benefited from the Warsaw Symposium as attendance counted as successful participation in a one-day refresher course.
